Gardenia taitensis<\/b><\/i>, also called Tahitian gardenia<\/b>[2]<\/a><\/sup> or tiar\u00e9 flower<\/b>, is a species of plant<\/a> in the family Rubiaceae<\/a>. It is an evergreen<\/a> tropical shrub<\/a> that grows to 4 m (10 ft) tall and has glossy dark green leaves that are 5\u201316 cm (2\u20136 in) long and are oppositely arranged along the stem. The flower is creamy white and pinwheel-shaped with 5\u20139 lobes, each 2\u20134 cm (0.8\u20132 in) long and fragrant. Native to the highland shores of the South Pacific<\/a>, it has the distinction of being one of the few cultivated plants native to Polynesia<\/a>. It is the national flower<\/a> of French Polynesia<\/a> and the Cook Islands<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The name Tahitian gardenia is somewhat a misnomer because it is neither native nor naturalized in Tahiti<\/a>. The first acceptable scientific name for the plant was based on Tahitian specimens collected by Jules Dumont d’Urville<\/a> in 1824. Hence the scientific name of Gardenia taitensis<\/i>, and the English name of Tahitian gardenia or Tiar\u00e9 flower. It was first collected in Tahiti, by the Forsters<\/a> on Captain Cook’s<\/a> first Pacific voyage (1768\u20131771), although it was misidentified as Gardenia florida<\/i>.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The plant originates from Melanesia<\/a> and Western Polynesia<\/a>. It is an aboriginal<\/a> introduction to the Cook Islands<\/a> and French Polynesia<\/a> and possibly Hawaii<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n
